Ontario County Probate Records

In Ontario, as in other counties in New York, the estate of a person who died while owning assets in the county goes through probate if they had a will. In contrast, when someone owns assets and dies without a will, their estate goes through administration.

Ontario County probate records are generally accessible to the public. However, certain records may be sealed or restricted from public view to protect the privacy of the deceased individual and their family.

Such records may include wills, estate administration files, letters testamentary, letters of administration, estate inventories, petitions, orders, accountings, and guardianship-related records. Requesters may access most of these records through the Ontario County Archives and Records page, which lists historical Surrogate Court files, bound volumes, estate inventories, wills, and guardianships.
